IT Support Issues, Questions and Directions Summary Information:
Computers: Researchers purchase their own computers, printer and peripherals. BIDMC has set guidelines for these
systems
(see
Computer Purchasing Recommendations and Guidelines).
High Performance Computing: Researchers needing high performance computing should contact the Informatics group within Academic
Computing to discuss options for building your own multi-CPU system or using the HMS Orchestra. . BIDMC has an arrangement with HMS for investigators to be able to add and use computers in the Orchestra high performance computing cluster. Please see the link
for more information on this resource.
Data Storage: IS provides 2 levels of centralized file sharing for all Linux, PC and Mac users. (H: or private share and R:/S: public share) Please see our Data Sharing guideline for more details.
Software: IS will provide anti-virus and Microsoft Office for computers following BIDMC guidelines. All other software must
be purchased by the user. BIDMC uses Harvard's Enterprise Licensing for educational discounts and software licenses (except DNAStar, please contact research@bidmc.harvard.edu for information on this software
license).
Email: BIDMC uses Microsoft Exchange and Outlook for email, calendaring, shared distribution lists. IS provides
on-line training material and classes on Office and Outlook.
We are committed to providing safe, efficient email for our users. Systems have been put in to place to protect the users,
the hardware and the network. Attachments are limited in size and zip files and other auto-run attachments are removed. If you would like to apply rules to process your email, please use our
guideline for help with rules. If you receive "out of space" messages, see our mailbox too large help file.
Networking: BIDMC supports both Ethernet and wireless networking within the main buildings. Wireless system has 2 networks (Guest
for patients and a secure network for BIDMC staff). For connection details and parameters for the staff network, contact IS Support (617-754-8080 or isupport@bidmc.harvard.edu)

Remote Access: Due to our concern for patient and business data safety, BIDMC has installed a network firewall. Some applications and resources can not be accessed when you are outside the BIDMC network
unless you use our SSLVPN site. See our instructions on using the
site to access Data Shares or your BI desktop. |
