Imaging / Microscopy Core Facility

FUNCTION:  The Microscopy Core Facility at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has 2 active microscopy services.  First, the Electron Microscopy Core provides service, technical assistance, and instrumentation for electron microscopy techniques.  Second, the Confocal Microscopy Service provides service and technical assistance for immunostaining, conventional and live-cell confocal microscopy, light (photodocumentation) and fluorescence microscopy, digital image acquisition and processing, and digital and conventional darkroom printing.   All work is done on a fee-for-service basis to recover costs for equipment upkeep and technical help.  Priority use is given to BIDMC investigators, but outside users are accepted

FACILITIES:  Equipment in the Microscopy Core Facility includes a JEOL 1200EX transmission electron microscope, Balzers MED020 vacuum evaporator, Durst and Omega enlargers, Agfa-Gevaert print processor, Ultracut E ultramicrotome and Ultracut S cryo-ultramicrotome, Nikon E800 light/fluorescence microscope that is outfitted with a SPOT-RT color camera, Zeiss LSM510 META confocal system, and Zeiss LSM510 META  live-cell confocal system*, Improvision Volocity software on a Dell workstation, and Fuji pictography color printer.

 * Please note that the LSM510 live cell system was purchased via the NIH Shared Instrument Program for specific Major and Minor user groups.  Thus, outside use is available but limited to those times not occupied by the core user groups.  BIDMC investigators will have priority but other outside users are also eligible for access.  Please contact the core confocal supervisor about specific availability

SERVICES: The Microscopy Core Facility provides a full range of standard microscopic services, including tissue preparation and embedding, thick and thin sectioning of tissues, frozen sectioning for light, fluorescence, and/or confocal microscopy, positive and negative staining, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase labeling of tissue sections, development and printing of photographic material.  No immunoEM is currently available.  The Microscopy Core facility is housed with the Histology Core Facility, which provides services in paraffin histology.  Please see http://research.bidmc.harvard.edu/CoreLabs/histolab.asp for details
