NCEP Criteria for Defining Abnormal Cholesterol
The National Cholesterol Education Program established the following criteria for defining cholesterol abnormalities

Total cholesterol:
  • <200 mg/dl: desirable

  • 200-239 mg/dl: borderline-high

  • 240 mg/dl or greater: high

HDL cholesterol
  • <40 mg/dl: low
