Introduction
Primary headaches are those that are not due to a pathologic cause. They are, by definition, benign and recurring headaches. Clinicians should not consider these as diagnoses of exclusion. Specific diagnostic features exist that allow one to diagnose these headaches with confidence.

This tutorial will review important clinical features of the three major primary headache syndromes:
  • migraine
  • tension-type
  • cluster headache
On the other hand, secondary headaches are those due to an underlying pathologic cause.
