Introduction
In healthy pre-menopausal women, regular, ovulatory menstrual cycles occur when there is orderly production of hormones from the hypothalamus (GnRH), anterior pituitary gland (FSH, LH), and ovarian follicles (estrogen, progesterone, others), and parallel proliferation, secretion, and eventual shedding of the uterine lining.
