Submission Signature Process - PI Requirement

Update on policy requiring Principal Investigator submission signature - Effective December 11, 2007 (See announcement memo)

PI Submission Signature Process

Per the new NIH policy, the signature of the Principal Investigator is no longer required as part of a submitted application.  Instead a new compliance requirement has been implemented to secure and retain, at the submitting organization, a written assurance from the Principal Investigator (PI) prior to submitting an application to the PHS.

The implementation of this requirement to capture and retain PI signatures will be via an electronic signature process similar to Effort Reporting.  PIs submitting applications will receive automated emails asking them to complete the electronic PI signature form for each impending grant submission.  At the current time, the deadline to submitting packages is 8 business days prior to the submission deadline.  Therefore, emails will be generated to each PI submitting an application at this time. The email will include the link to the Submission Signature page.

The three certification statements required by NIH of all PIs submitting applications are listed below:

1. The information submitted within the application is true, complete and accurate to the best of the PI's knowledge.

2. Any false, fictitious, or fraudulent statements or claims may subject the PI to criminal, civil, or administrative penalties.

3. The PI agrees to accept responsibility for the scientific conduct of the project and to provide the required progress reports if a grant is awarded as a result of the application.

We appreciated your timely attention to this matter and thank you for using our electronic signature process.

If you have any questions regarding the NIH Compliance Requirement, please contact OSP at resadmin@bidmc.harvard.edu

On behalf of the many individuals working on these processes, we appreciate your help and welcome any suggestions.
