Major Research Theme
| The primary interest in the Lung Macrophage Research Laboratory relates to the study of alveolar macrophage molecular cell biology in the context of innate immunity and lung host defenses against opportunistic pathogens. Projects seek to define the molecular mechanisms that mediate lung macrophage pattern-recognition receptor-mediated engagement, induction of specific signal transduction pathways and host defense gene activation in response to infectious challenge, and to examine the influence of HIV infection on alveolar macrophage innate immune function. Studies examine the roles of macrophage phagocytic receptors and Toll-like receptors (TLR) in mediating critical host cell processes such as phagocytosis and autophagy in health and disease. Pathogens of interest include Pnuemocystis, M. tuberculosis, pyogenic bacteria and Influenza A virus. The projects focus on cultured primary human alveolar macrophages. |
