Major Research Theme
| Mara Schonberg, MD, MPH is a researcher and staff physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Her research is aimed at improving the quality of preventive health care delivered for older women. Her research has focused in four areas: 1) Decision-making and outcomes of mammography screening among older women; 2) Physician counseling to older women about mammography screening and exercise; 3) Delivery of preventive health services to older women including screening tests, healthy lifestyle counseling, and immunizations; and 4) Examining how older women value preventive health services and trust medical recommendations about disease prevention after the Women’s Health Initiative Trial. Dr. Schonberg’s research has been supported by both federal and foundation grants including from The National Cancer Institute, The Harvard Older Americans’ Independence Center, and The Hartford Foundation. Currently, Dr. Schonberg is funded by a NIA K23 award. As part of this grant, Dr. Schonberg is examining breast cancer characteristics, treatment, and survival among women aged 80 and older compared to women aged 65-79 and she is exploring the psychological impact and decision-making of older women after an abnormal mammogram. She plans to use these data to create tools to help physicians and older women make decisions around breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment. |
