Major Research Theme
Dr. Shapiro is an Assistant Professor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, and works as an infectious disease specialist and clinical researcher in the field of international HIV. His primary interests are the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (MTCT) and the reduction of morbidity and mortality among infants born to HIV-infected women. Since 1999, Dr. Shapiro has studied infant outcomes and peripartum MTCT prevention strategies among 1200 mothers and infants in the Mashi Study in Botswana, and he has led the immunologic, virologic, and pharmacologic analyses of breast milk among women in this cohort. He is also the principal investigator of an ongoing clinical trial in Botswana (the Mma Bana Study) that studies different antiretroviral combinations for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding. Dr. Shapiro serves as the Associate Director of Education and Training at the Office of International Programs of Harvard Medical School’s Division of AIDS. He has worked as a co-investigator on HIV vaccine trials in Boston, and is a former Epidemic Intelligence Officer at the Foodborne and Diarrheal Diseases Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
