Major Research Theme
Our research is centered on understanding the biology of complement receptor 1 (CR1, CD35) expressed on human erythrocytes and neutrophils. In erythrocytes, we study the mechanisms triggered by CR1 ligation that are responsible for altering the mechanical properties of the plasma membrane as well as the production and release of biologically active molecules. In neutrophils, our research is aimed at defining the pathways responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect that follows engagement of CR1 during phagocytosis.
Major Collaborative Activities
-The role of erythrocytes in ischemia re-perfusion injury; collaboration with Dr. George Tsokos; Dept. of Medicine. BIDMC
